In 1986 the then government passed the Optician’s Act, which allowed glasses to be dispensed by people who weren’t necessarily opticians- with a few restrictions.

Brian Cudworth, an experienced spectacle manufacturer and wholesaler, saw the opportunity to offer quality eyewear direct to the public at previously unheard of prices.

Specs Opticians was born, and opened on Osmaston Road in the autumn of that year.

Brian and his son, Andrew, ran the business for the next 31 years, gradually expanding the services they offered to include a fully equipped consulting room for eye examinations.

In the summer of 2017, Brian retired and the business was sold to the current owner, David Mason.

David qualified as a Dispensing Optician through City and East London College in 1985. He has worked in many different practices and businesses over the years, including 12 years running a successful practice in Birmingham. He has been a member of the Board of Practical Examiners of The Association of British Dispensing Opticians, as well as Training and Education Manager for a large optical retailer.

Having taken over Specs, David is determined to adhere to the original ethos of the business; quality eyewear at affordable prices, with old-fashioned personal, professional and friendly service.
